Squawking and Steining

A famous sax player is practicing upstairs in the dance studio, squawking away with much energy. The rest of us sit, glazed like donuts, tapping weakly at our keyboards. Will it ever stop raining and blowing and sucking?

"Disillusionment in living [writes Gertrude Stein] is the finding out nobody agrees with you. ... The amount they agree is important to you until the amount they do not agree with you is completely realized by you. Then you say you will write for yourself and strangers, you will be for yourself and strangers and this then makes an old man or an old woman of you."

Yeah, but if Gertrude Stein had been alive today she would have had an online diary. Without a guestbook, because she wouldn't want to know who disagreed with her.
