This Old Dwelling

Like Kitty, I am catching up on "The Sopranos" on DVD, but have recently been distracted by "Colonial House" for free on PBS. This series promises to be as engrossing as "Frontier House," with the added tension of class and power struggles. Next week the governor departs - what will happen? The Rossi-Voorhees woman is emerging as tough and challenging as Carmela Soprano. Although, as my friend Ryan notes, "they should be forced to go to church, but whatever. I mean honestly, atheism is fine and all, but if you sign on to a Puritan show, you've gotta be prepared to renounce your beliefs and go with the flow. I wish they would banish her Anne Hutchinson-style, but I doubt that will happen."

If you're going to play by the rules, though, what about Jonathan, who just came out as gay? Should he be punished or banished or killed? The very pious governor observed that church was an odd place to come out (but where else would he get everyone's attention? The bowling alley?) and that he didn't think people should be patted on the back for breaking the rules. He's right, you know: "affirming differences" is very 21st century.

According to publicity, the Rossi-Voorhees woman does get put in the stocks for skipping church, but by rights she should have her tongue in a cage for talking back to her husband.

Well, readers, keep it tuned to PBS!
