beulahbondo's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Best not to say too much What the hayull is wrong with the Red Sox? As I write, they are down 7-2 to Toronto, top of the sixth, DiNardo pitching. I just watched this really mediocre documentary about Pete Best, the Beatles' "moody and magnificent" former drummer. Mediocre because it provided absolutely no evidence, musical or otherwise, that he did or did not fit in with the Beatles. Shots of the present-day Pete Best (moustache, retired civil servant) walking around Hamburg or sitting behind a dramatically lit drum kit. Very short interviews with guys from Liverpool who all were on Pete's side, basically. Completely uncontextualized footage of huge crowds cheering and holding up beer glasses, presumably at some "Pete Best Band" concert at a Beatles convention. Unidentified background music. A shot of Pete playing with his present-day band alongside another drummer captioned as "Roag Best." Hello! It took some www digging but as I thought, Roag is the half-brother produced by Pete's mother (the famously teen-friendly mother who opened the coffee club where all the bands played) and Neil Aspinall, the Beatles' friend and road manager. Why did the documentary not go into all this? Because it was produced by Pete and Roag, that's why... And that's tonight overly close look at a small piece of television. 9:13 p.m. - 2005-09-28 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
